How the Fujifilm Instax changed my view of photography by James Posilero

Discalimer: Fujifilm has not influenced this article in any way, shape or form. The opinions here are mine and mine alone.

Now that’s out of the way, yes the camera is pink :) That’s because it is my wife’s who was gifted with the camera on her birthday. We played with it for a couple of days and then the inevitable happened… it was put away… out of sight… out of mind.

See, I was born in the 80’s and film was all we had back then. To view the photos, we had no choice but to have them printed and with the advent of the digital age, we somehow lost that… the final product… THE PRINT.

Some of you may argue with me but yes, the print is the culmination of a photo whether borne from film or digital file. Then again, that’s just me and each to their own.

We’ve had the Instax for 2 years and during that time I have been engaged with my first Fujifilm camera, the X100s. Eventually sold that to fund a used XT-1 and just recently upgraded to the XT-3, a subject for another day.

All this time, I have never really printed any of my photos and a couple of weeks ago I found the Instax inside my wife’s bedside table. From that moment we made a decision to use it more regularly especially having 100 films waiting to be used. There is definitely something gratifying about a photo instantly printed and tactile.

I found the prints very nostalgic and have since made printing a focus. As we speak, I have two images from the XT-1 currently in a professional lab being printed in fine art paper and I am quite excited about it. Never have I printed anything beyond a 5”x7” & 8”x10” (once) and both these images are being printed in A3 size.

I will forever be thankful to the humble (pink) Fujifilm Instax Mini 8 for it opened up my photographic horizons. If there is one thing you can take away from reading this, I hope it’s that you start printing your photos too. Together let’s bring back the good old days.

Thanks for reading as always.

All the best,
